As UNHCR statistics generally rely on data from host countries, statistics on refugees alone can give an insufficient account of refugee numbers, as some host countries will not grant refugee status to certain groups. Including statistics for individuals in refugee-like situations is an attempt to account for unrecognised refugees and does not include internally displaced persons. Statistics for stateless refugees are included if available.

The Peace Institute – Institute for Contemporary Social and Political Studies – is an independent, non-profit research institution founded in 1991. In the field of migration and asylum, the Peace Institute conducts monitoring and research and engages in the provision of expertise to various stakeholders. Their research projects include the monitoring of refugee policies and tackling xenopohbia and hate speech arising from the current refugee situation.Other projects cover issues such as the presence/absence and implementation of legislative safeguards for the prevention of childhood statelessness at the national level in Balkan countries. Their most current project, “Participating in a Coordination of NGOs in the Field of Asylum,” has the purpose of strengthening the role of NGOs in this field and motivating them to act jointly in the media and in negotiations with state authorities, to exchange information, and to divide tasks.

PIC provides legal assistance to asylum seekers in Slovenian asylum procedures and monitors police procedures at border entry points. Additionally, PIC participates in other activities related to asylum, migration and integration, including advocacy, research and training. PIC has an office in the Asylum Home in Ljubljana (Slovenia has only one) and it is also one of the UNHCR implementing partners for asylum related programs.

Program Migration (former Centre for Psychosocial Assistance to Refugees) is dealing with different aspects of contemporary migration. We provide advice, information, psychosocial support and advocacy for various marginalized groups of migrants, such as asylum seekers, refugees, unaccompanied children, undocumented migrants and migrant workers. We provide also guardianship for unaccompanied children and organize learning Slovenian language as well as other educational assistance, social activities and other forms of assistance in integration. We encourage development of migrant´s individual talents and skills and use them for integration into the social life. We educate volunteers, include them in our activities and provide mentor support for them. We are advocating for appropriate legislation and practice in the field of migration in Slovenia. We are committed to intercultural dialogue, self-organization and the possibility of political participation of migrants and for the cooperation and coordination between the various actors working in the field of migration in Slovenia.
Program was established in 1994 in response to the situation in the former Yugoslavia at that time. Program has been UNHCR implementing partner form 1994 till 2007. In the 90´s activities were primarily intended to refugees who came to Slovenia from Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and later from Kosovo. These included visits to refugee accommodation centers, to provide psychosocial support, promote and organize the education of refugees, learning the Slovenian language, self-help groups, involvement of volunteers to assist refugees and other activities.
The current activities of the program:
– counseling, advocacy and psychosocial support to various marginalized groups of migrants (asylum seekers, refugees, unaccompanied children, migrant workers);
– guardianship for unaccompanied children;
– learning the Slovenian language, other educational assistance;
– support for social integration;
– trainings and support for volunteers;
– striving for appropriate legislation and practice on migration in Slovenia,
– raising awareness on the issues related to contemporary migration and migrants,
– cooperation with the media,
– trainings on migration related issues for volunteers and experts,
– research on migration in Slovenia,
– networking on the field of migration in Slovenia,
– participation in various professional bodies (the council for the integration of foreigners and working group on combating human trafficking),
– participation in European Integration and Migration Forum,
– membership in the Separted Children in Europe Programme (SCEP).
