As UNHCR statistics generally rely on data from host countries, statistics on refugees alone can give an insufficient account of refugee numbers, as some host countries will not grant refugee status to certain groups. Including statistics for individuals in refugee-like situations is an attempt to account for unrecognised refugees and does not include internally displaced persons. Statistics for stateless refugees are included if available.

The Raad voor Rechtsbijstand’s aim is to make sure you will have legal representation should you require any. If you cannot afford a solicitor, the Council will provide financial support. Your solicitor will receive a monetary allowance. Clients will pay part of the cost. The size of the contribution depends on the size of your income. VON is a national umbrella organisation with more than 400 refugee organisation members. They can provide information about the local groups in your area and where to access assistance. VON represent the interests of refugees in the Netherlands and advocate on their behalf for the respect of their human rights, as per the international treaties that the Netherlands has a duty to conform to.

VluchtelingenWerk Nederland (Dutch Refugee Council) is an independent, non-governmental organisation, founded in 1979. They offer refugees practical support during their asylum procedure and can help them rebuild their lives in the Netherlands. With one National Office, 14 regional offices, and 310 local branches, they are active in 90% of all local council districts. The National Office supports the regional and local branches with advice, education, and information. They provide personal and legal support, and can access lawyers for asylum claims. They also provide information about countries of origin to lawyers, as well as sources to substantiate asylum claims, research case law history and (European) legislation.

ANTI-FGM/C ORGANISATIONS IN THE NETHERLANDS

Pharos

In the Netherlands Pharos is the national knowledge centre on female genital mutilation. They focus on health, prevention and healthcare for circumcised women and offer a FGM/C prevention teaching toolkit for education. It can be used for teaching both pupils from ethnic backgrounds and their classmates who are not familiar with FGM/C. The toolkit is suitable for different ages and educational levels.

COC Netherlands has been advocating the rights of lesbian women, gay men, bisexuals and trans people (LGBT’s) from 1946 on. COC strives for the decriminalisation of sexual orientation and gender identity and for equal rights, emancipation and social acceptance of LGBT’s in the Netherlands and all over the world. COC is one of the few LGBT organisations that has a special consultative status with the United Nations.
