As UNHCR statistics generally rely on data from host countries, statistics on refugees alone can give an insufficient account of refugee numbers, as some host countries will not grant refugee status to certain groups. Including statistics for individuals in refugee-like situations is an attempt to account for unrecognised refugees and does not include internally displaced persons. Statistics for stateless refugees are included if available.

Our goal is that all refugees and migrants should be treated with the dignity and respect that everyone is entitled, and our immigration and asylum systems should be fair and effective.We attempt to achieve this goal in a number of ways, including carrying out research into aspects of immigration and asylum policy and practice, developing proposals for improving those policies and practices and then promoting our proposals with the government, MPs and other opinion formers, and intervening in key court cases to ensure asylum decisions are made using the best available evidence on human rights conditions.
